Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. This present study was designed to ascertain the histological changes induced by cholesterol in the presence of aqueous extract of ginger on the blood vessels and wall of the heart. Healthy adult Wistar rats (n=16) weighing 180-280g were used for this study. They were randomly categorized into four groups of four rats per group. Group A served as the control group while groups B, C and D were the experimental groups fed high cholesterol diet, aqueous extract of ginger and ginger extract with cholesterol respectively. The heart and the blood vessel (aorta) were carefully dissected out for histological study. The results showed the harmful effects of cholesterol on the heart and vascular wall, these effects were eliminated by the administration of ginger extract. This study showed that aqueous extract of ginger may be cardioprotective as it eliminated the lesions induced by high cholesterol diet
